Miscarriage Q & A
What is a miscarriage?
A miscarriage occurs when an embryo or fetus dies before the 20th week of pregnancy. In most cases, miscarriages happen within the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.
The cause of miscarriage is often difficult to identify. However, it’s essential to understand that everyday activities such as exercise, sexual intercourse, or working don’t cause miscarriage.
The most common known cause of pregnancy loss is a chromosomal abnormality in the fetus that makes life unviable. Other factors include diseases like diabetes or severe illnesses or injuries.
What are the signs of a miscarriage?
If you have a miscarriage before you know you’re pregnant, you may feel like you’re having a heavy or painful period. However, if your pregnancy is confirmed, some of the signs of a miscarriage include:
- Vaginal bleeding or spotting
- Fluid or tissue passing out of your vagina
- Abdominal or back cramping
In some cases, you may miscarry and not know until you have an ultrasound.
What should I do if I think I’m having a miscarriage?
If you experience any signs of miscarriage, call Dr. Taylor immediately. These symptoms don’t always indicate pregnancy loss, but you should get medical attention as soon as possible.
Dr. Taylor provides an exam to determine if you’re having a miscarriage or if another issue is causing your symptoms. She gives you instructions on how to take care of yourself and what to expect physically during a miscarriage.
Miscarriage experiences vary in speed and the severity of symptoms. Also, there’s no standard emotional response. What you feel is right for you.
You have a follow-up appointment with Dr. Taylor, and she checks to make sure that no pregnancy tissue remains in your uterus. If necessary, she can perform an aspiration procedure to clear your uterus and reduce your risk of infection.
Can I get pregnant after a miscarriage?
Yes, a miscarriage won’t prevent you from getting pregnant again. Dr. Taylor provides advice on how to take care of your body and your emotions following pregnancy loss to give you the best chances of getting pregnant again.
If you’ve had more than two miscarriages, your risk of having another one increases. If you’re planning on getting pregnant again, talk to Dr. Taylor about your history. She can run tests to try to identify the issue and provide advice to help you have healthy, successful pregnancies.
